I am putting together a table of timber yards, with information from members who have actually visited the yards. Can you please help with information about W L West?

Are they hobby friendly?

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?

Will they deliver?

Do they have online ordering?

Are prices displayed at the yard?

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?

Do they sell other hardwoods?

Do they sell softwoods?

Do they sell manufactured boards?

Do they sell turning blanks?

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?

Do you have any comments?

Thanks for your help,
Neil

Hi, Medium to large yard. Several people in the office.

Hobby friendly with small shop for tools and wood supplies.

I think you can self select but probably need to tell someone in the office you are there.

They will deliver for additional charge.

You can order by email but no online forms or website system as far as I know.

Ask at the office for prices as these vary.

Domestic and foreign hardwood and softwood. Don't think they sell manufactured boards.

Timber can be planed around to size and cut to length, with some machining profiling available. Subject to original sizing of sawn timber

Small to large blanks available, often pre-priced.

If staff available they may cut to fit into vehicle.

I have found them to be friendly and helpful, willing to sell to small-order customers as well as large commercial orders. They are a family run firm and in my experience have been noticeably cheaper than a near competitor, but prices vary according to market conditions. Specialists in all sorts of hard and softwoods. The shop has a very good range of hand-tools and hobbyist supplies and they support the hobbyist, low-volume craft person very well. If you're unused to commercial wood-yards going to the office (separate from shop) may feel intimidating but I don't think they bite.
