I thought this might be a useful topic for anyone looking looking to glaze green oak structures.
I'm about to glaze an oak porch using the "direct" method - cutting rebates into the oak, then fitting glass and beading. Expanding foam tape will go between the glass and the oak to prevent a weatherproof seal.
I will also cut the bottom/cill rebates with a slight bevel to allow water to run off. Other methods to the direct approach are to use lead flashing on the bottom/cill rebates to prevent water ingress, such as below:
Another glazing method is "applied" - fitting glass over the oak frame then using cover boards to sandwich them together, as below:
These two methods seem to be the most common in modern use and both appear to have their pros and cons.
Any thoughts, tips or additions welcome!
