Hi all

I picked up this plane at the bottom of a box at a car boot a few weeks ago and got round to having a look at it today. When I first saw it I assumed it was a shop repair, as the bolts of the tote go through to the sole and are in brass and also the sole doesn't look like one complete piece like my other #4. I am rubbish at explaining my self so took a few pictures.

It is 62mm wide without the band and is 65mm with it.

I was hoping some of you guys might have some info about it. I have looked around online but don't really know what to look for TBH

Thank you for any help
Danny

I didn't think of that, The frog is Stanley as it has Stanley stamped on the lateral adjuster lever, and it has Bailey no 4 at the front of the plane under the knob. I just assumed it was Stanley

Cheers guys

I think it is a Type 17, but has some extra metal attached to the sides.
Check the actual threads holding the rear handle, I'll bet their not Stanley, been re drilled and tapped right through.
As for adjustment, does the black knob have plenty of travel without the blade fitted?

Not that much more tbh, the thread is very short

It looks like a normal Stanley no 4 but has extra side plates added, attached with either screws or rivets then filed flat.

There is also an extra screw at the front base of the rear handle, the rear handle on no 4 planes usually only have one long bolt/screw, at least the Stanley and Records ones do. It also looks like the rear handle screw has be repaired or modified.

I don't know why someone would want to add these side plates other than to make it heavier and maby resemble the no4s.
I like customs on tools, adds a bit of fun I think.

I had a UK Stanley No.3, that would have been a lovely plane had it not had a crack from the mouth right up the left-hand "wing". I was going to epoxy a piece of 16g steel or brass sheet to the side to make it a user. But then I picked up a Marples M3 body and transferred most of the parts across. I guess it was going to be a frankeplane either way. That cracked Stanley casting is so nice I still haven't tossed it

The patent date makes the lever-cap a type #16 (1933-41), but type #17 used up left over bits so that probably about right.

Cheers, Vann.

That's a good point vann and also a good quess at a reason this plane is mod.
I guess we will never really know.
I have one plane with a crack in the casting and it breaks my heart.
