The Record No4 project is coming together now and I just need to order a Hock blade and chipbreaker at the end of the month. A coupla pics to show an indication of what the final plane ought to look like:

The last shot shows all the little fiddly bits. The worst thing to clean up was the 'Y' lever, if you look carefully you'll Jarviser's mod on it, to be fettled into the chipbreaker later, new 4mm pin made from a HSS drill bit The lateral adjusting lever was also a genuine 24 carat pita to clean up cos it's nickle plated which had to be stripped off with sandpaper, in fact the whole lever had to be stripped back to bare metal and a new little handle made from walnut and rosewood fitted at the end. The other end also had to be removed and a new round washer made and riveted in place. Big thanks to Newt for machining me a new brass bolt:

Will post some more pics of the plane with blade when it's all together next month - Rob

Don't know whether I want to show you my #4 now - it might look a bit scruffy next to yours

Beautiful work, Rob =D>

Cheers

Rob,

Excellent job! You make me want to do alike :D That does not mean I will do, but that's kind of motivation in your pics #-o

=D> =D> =D>

Mind you me asking how many hours got into that project?

Is the frog of this Record plane typical of all Record bench planes? Looks like a Bailey Type 11, 10 etc. which is sort of a "poorman's Bedrock".

Thanks,

Tony Z.

Tony - the frog shown is an old one, how old I know not. The modern Record and Stanley frogs don't have nearly as much cast iron in contact with the blade and are much lighter, flimsier affairs. As to being a 'bedrock' I don't think they are (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) as the bedrock type of frog works on a different principle to the Record design - Rob

As far as I remember Record stopped making that style of frog in the mid to late 1960s. It's not a Bedrock.

Cheers

Hi Rob,

That is looking absolutely gorgeous, you must be very proud of the way that has come up! I guess when you polished the sole you used wet&dry on a reference plate of some description, how about the sides? Did you grind/polish them by hand or again on a flat surface to make it a good 'shooter'?

Hi Rob

Like all have said befor eme oyu have done a very nice job of that plane and looking at the pic's, am I right in seeing that you have made a low knob for the front :?:

Most of the bench planes I have are the low knob type and the one that did not have one, now does ( my #3 Stanley £3 car boot buy )

Colin - correct, I made an extra low and chunky knob for the front from some English Walnut, same as the tote, but the front knob is even lower than those found on the older Records - Rob

I prefer the loow knobs as I think you get more control but that could be just me ( Mr Kingshot too )
