I got this Caulking hammer the other day, for £1.

It is need of some TLC

One of the rivets was broken and was falling out.

I need a resin face for the work this is planned for.

The metal was anneled and held in place with tape.
This is the first fill with a hard red resin. It will find the smallest weak point and it will leak.

You need to just over fill it, as it will contract as it sets.

Spot the new rivet, yes I did clean the extra resin off.

Done, showing the clear resin end.

I’ve always wondered why caulking hammers are so long in the head.
Those who have caulked the bottom of a ship say the long head helps a lot with ergonomics when you are hammering upwards. I have never done it myself so I can only trust their words.

The hoops are conical and are hammered further onto the head as it wears. They say that old caulking mallets with short worn down heads are more ergonomic for caulking decks but I have never done that either so we can only rely on their word for that too.
