I’m looking at a range of small projects for the winter months.
I had decided I wanted to develop my hand skills with various joints – dove tails etc, so I thought I might run up a few boxes.
Most of my projects are done with recycled wood but I had decided I needed some decent hardwood, so had run up a shopping list of oak I wanted, for next time I was passing John Boddies. No rush as I’m busy until well into November.

Yesterday SWMBO had a phone call from one of her friends “ We are having the kitchen refitted tomorrow, does your mad bloke (SWMBO refers to me as Steptoe cos I have a shed full of “junk”) want the old cupboard doors, they are Oak, I think”
Me thinking they would be foil printed MDF, was not that keen but said yes to be polite. An hour later they were delivered to the doorstep.
14 doors of assorted sizes all are pristine solid Oak. Just the panels should yield 20 sq foot of 12mm boards and then there is the wood in the frames. They are so good I’m reluctant to cut them up, but it’s saved me quite a few quid.
It makes you wonder how many rainforests worth of decent wood is actually thrown out every week.

Hi Lurker,
Lucky you, quite a windfall there.
Look forward to seeing photos of the finished articles

I may not be able to "beat you" at equipment owning stakes Wizer, but at wood hoarding you are in the junior league matey!!
I have a double ( note not single) Garage full although strangely, until yesterday few Oak boards for small projects.

I had a bit of a clear out the other day, boards stashed in one place (well, three...), odd lengths in a bin type container and scraps that have no use were sent to the fire.

Currently the stove is dining on quartersawn oak, maple, sycamore, english walnut, american black walnut, two types of mahogany and beech

hmmm what sort of size ABW is that stove dining on?

I think it was one piece of 18mm about 20cm long and 5cm wide - with a big hollow in the middle where I'd been practising with a luthier plane.

It's now changed species and has become a pieec of ash...

I'm here all week

Hi, Lurker

Steady, you will have that garage full soon.

I don't need any Mark. But it hurts me to hear that he's burning it. I love the stuff. :D

Rest easy Tom, it was too small to do anything with :D

I have some interesting ripple maple offcuts from the legs of the TV stand that may make good pen blanks. Or tool handles......

Too small is when it gets smaller than your thumbnail Damian. Fancy burning walnut, rosewood, oak, ebony, maple, greenheart, teak, african blackwood, kingwood, purpleheart...heathern! (same as my daughter when she has a double fried egg sarni  on a Sunday morning)  - Rob

A mate of mine mentioned to me the other day, that his brother whilst demolishing a school in Kent last week, filled a wood skip with science lab worktops.

Along with another 2 skips full of Gym hardwood flooring.

I must admit i actually felt a little sick, and still do when i think about the amount of money people throw away without even thinking about it!! ](*,)

Always up for something interesting Damian, never played with Maple before. Do you need knobs for the TV Stand?

Andy,

Even if you had known about the school skips full of wood you wouldn't have been allowed to touch them because once government property is destined for the dump it has to go there and removal of material is considered theft of public property.

I think it is terrible but more powerful people than me make the rules.

I used to overhaul RN binoculars, rangefinders etc. Any that were deemed too far gone for the Navy specs, although quite good enough for casual use, were given to a man with an anvil and a large hammer.

You know when a solid oak flooring is fitted incorrectly (large area, floated) and turns into a skate park - well it then gets thrown away.

So there's about 40 sq metres of 22mm oak in a queue for a log burner. It's really quite nice, so I fancy grabbing it. But I have no skills to do anything with it. I need to go on a wood-working course.
