Hi All,

I have been browsing for a while on here and decided to take the plunge and jump in.

I am an engineer by trade and now work in the engineering training sector training electrical and mechanical apprentices, but have developed a taste for working on the softer stuff over the last few years, spurred on by needing a few bits of equipment for my cottage renovation, and my interest in making gunstocks for competition air rifles.

I am on the look out for 5 engineering lathes old school type(colchester/harrison), for a new training centre we are putting together if anyone can help. Good prices paid for tidy machines. PS. I am not a dealer and can provide evidence of sincerity if needed.

Dean.

Welcome Dean,

You'll find the vast majority of members very helpful here.

Re the lathes (wish I was buying just 1, let alone 5 off!), I suggest you go to WH Smith and buy the current copy of either/both "Model Engineer" or "Model Engineer's Workshop" mags. You'll not only find subscribers advertising their own machines for sale (natuarally one offs usually) but also regular ads from what seem to be reputable traders advertising all sorts of SH stock. I say "reputableW without having had any particular delaings, but from my latest edition of "MEW" I suggest you try:

1. G&M Tools in Sussex (www.gandmtools.co.uk), and/or:

2. Home and Workshop Machinery in Kent (www.homeandworkshop.co.uk).

As said, I've had no dealings with either but both have advertised regularly for several years and if they'd have been in any way dodgy I would have expected some sort of feedback either in the mags themselves or the website for the mags:

Finally there are metal lathe ads by members of this Forum in the For Sale section from time to time, but as you'd expect, I don't remember ever seeing anyone advertising any 5 off deals ;-)

Welcome, Dean!

If you're looking for industrial machines, how about trying one of the secondhand machinery dealers? If you go along to them with a shopping list of Colchester Student sized centre lathes, Bridgeport mills, radial drills, offhand grinders and whatnot, they may well put together a package deal - and they've got the kit to deliver and install the machines, too.

Here's one example - http://www.bwmachinetools.co.uk/

Hi,
Yes I am doing that but the prices are crazy to be honest, and I will end up buying for a few locations to get what I need anyway. About five years ago we bought a set of five chines cast machines (Knuth) that have been absolutely rubbish and for the same kind of money, and I would rather buy second hand British machinery. Oh I need a Bridgeport type turret mill as well.
I already have an old Colchester Student at home which has served me well but these are for a new apprentice training centre we are setting up. I work for a Group training association that is also a not for profit charity.
I will chase up the BW lead up thanks. The others that I have been dealing with are mainly over Sheffield or the North east.

PS. It was due to good information from this site that I bought a second hand TS200 saw and know that there is a of of knowledge on here. Well pleased with the saw bench!

Cheers guys.

Welcome - this forum led me to a second hand TS200 years ago and it is still going well. For your lathes in might be worth having a word with Alec Vallance - alec(at)budgetmachinery(dot)co(dot)uk. He is based in N Yorkshire and is a very nice bloke to deal with. He normally trades in larger bits of kit with swings measured in metres but I know in the past he has cleared college and training centre workshops so he might be able to find some stuff for you. I would say tell him Graham the boatfixer put you on to him but he might charge you more...:)
