Hi all, newbie here, been an arborist 11 yr cut long story short just got into wood turning and stuff but need advice on a project I'm goin to try basically I have a nice slice of silver birch 1 n half inch thick and a friend who is getting married wants it for ppl to write messages on on there wedding day. The slice has come from a half dead birch but still healthy wood I'm just wanting some advice on treating it and also how to seal it after the pen has writing on it. Obviosly il be sanding it maybe add a little Danish oil long before the pen adds to it. Apreciate any help and advice thankyou, Simon

Simon,

If it is a full round then it could (will probably) split as it dries and may or not stay in one piece alas.

Not withstanding the above, I'd use a standard sanding sealer before people sign it, and assuming some sort of sharpie marker, an aerosol applied acrylic Matt lacquer to seal after.

Best of luck,

Simon

Thanks for the reply SVB never thought of the spray lacquer.

I have warned it may split too much so use this as a secondary option and have something else in place to sign as well.

Thanks, Si
