Hi all

I've only been turning half a dozen or so weeks now, and have discovered that the 'slope' is very dangerous..... certainly caught me unaware.

Anyway.... i've had some wood that i'm nearly through. Some given to me (stacks of Kapur, a species of Teak), some acquired, and some bought very cheaply. I've also been given a load of 'green' wood now stacked up and drying.

I live on the outskirts of Southampton and would like to know where can i get hold of some nice dried wood ready for turning. Plus what sort of prices i should expect to pay, i.e. is it sold by weight, volume, or just plain old "that's a nice bit, let charge more for it".

I'm also in the process of figuring out the piccie thing, just as soon as i can sort that out i'll post some of my 'bodgings' :D

Cheers all

Nick

Hi Nick,

The cheap way is to

Go along to your local Lumberyard/ Builders merchants and ask for some offcuts. My Missus went for me a few months ago, and brought back more oak and mahog planks than i know what do to with.

Also ask all your friends/family etc NOT to throw out tier old doors/tv units etc.

Your stock pile will soon build up.

For more exotic woods then theres alway the online method, Styles&bates have a huge selection and deliver,

Hello Nick,
Ongoing problem for us all. When I started turning I happened across a local council worker as he was cutting down a rather large cherry tree as they had deemed it dangerous in its location. I said "What do you do with the bits you when you cut it up for transporting it away", "He said oh we burn it" Sacrilege I thought! "Can I take some" I said. "Take as much as you like". He replied. Now, one is limited to the size of trunk one can pick up, So! after a few more words he agreed to drop off some boles. I turned him some bowls, and a very mutual arrangement was made. Local councils, tree surgeons and the like are a very good source of timber.
good luck,
John.B
PS I thought you would out watching the QE II this morning

Also, try contacting your local cabinet makers as they have nice timber off cuts all piled up, ready for burning.

Try asking your local tree surgeons they are usualy only to glad to get rid of whatever timber they get. (Usualy for free)
