Hi all

I've been looking around for a while now and I've finally decided that it's time to actually do some work!!

I'm planning on making a coffee table (to replace the junk I got from Argos many moons ago) out of two different type of wood. The first is to be a pale wood for all the frame work of the table with the second a darker for two pannels on the table top.

First question is anybody got any recommendations on woods to work with for a first project ....

and

secondly can anybody suggest a good place to purchase the timber in Lancashire (around preston or blackburn)

thanks

Ian

I’ve just started making a coffee table too, and I’m using Ash for the main elements of the table. It’s a good pale wood, which I find relatively cheap, compared to some other hardwoods. I’m new to woodwork too (I’m only on my 3rd project), but I’ve used Ash a few times and find it pretty easy to use, but then I don’t have much to compare it to! Not sure about good darker wood for a first project?!

English ash and english walnut? Saves on the environmental cost of shipping stuff across the pond. However it may be cheaper (in ££) to use american walnut/maple as suggested

Hi Ian,
Welcome to the forum, there are a lot of highly skilled and friendly folk on here. So there is not much that you can ask for without getting the answer from someone.
We all try to help one another.
As to your request try this site below. They are all woodyards in and around Preston.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Cheers.

PS Don't be surprised at the cost of walnut, it can be horrendous.

Ah but doesn't it look good, especially up against maple 8).

And as Ian only needs 2 short panels for the top of his coffee table the cost should not be too bad.

I agree that there's no comparison, but around my way you can't buy it for love nor money.

Cheers
