Hi All,

I've been near silently lurking for a while but have learnt a huge amount from the forum and have been inspired by the work shown. I've been into general woodwork for a while but get very little time to indulge. Young children, work etc .. What time I do get tends to be furniture for the house rather than turning (on the list at the moment is a bench seat and 10 panel doors...) Given the choice however I would spend most time turning :)

so, spurred on by the Wisdom of Jenx (that should be a book title)...and with some trepidation here are some photos of my efforts...apologies for the photo quality! I have more enthusiasm than ability at the moment, but I enjoy it!

First attempt at a hollow form. I got the pro-forme hollowing tool at ally pally...it took a while to get time to play! Wall thickness is pretty even but I rushed the finish which is disapointing.

I like yew...it always feels warm and tactile...and is readily available from westonbirt :) This as my first attempt at a roll top bowl.

The first bowl I turned...included for sentimental reasons!

one of my favourite vases...1/2 lined inside with epoxy so it can hold water.

Thanks for looking...all comments welcome!

Great to see you exploring some of the more adventurous forms Jeremy, looks like you have a leaning to the more figurative woods.

As Chas said, nice to see someone who is going for the lesss normal. Join the club. Try getting hold of some hawthorn as that can be as spectacular as yew at times, especially if it's a twisted piece.

Some nice looking pieces there, especially like the look iof the hollow form.

All nice work;the hollowform looks particularly impressive, and you are right about the yew having a very tactile look to it :D

Andrew (who has also still got the first bowl I turned  )

I like your roll top yew bowl very much, and all your pieces are excellent work from a newbie. I too have kept my first ever bowl - but it's not a nice as your one - mine's more of a flower pot shape :(

Some nice pieces there Jeremy, personal favorite is the vase but they're all nice.

Is it possible to buy timber from westonbirt ? It's somewhere I've never been and not too far from me either.

Regards

Steve :)

....

Yes it is, the Friends run a wood sale session every month (look at friends of westonbirt web site for dates)

It used to be quite an economical source, especially with a sort through the 'graveyard' stacks out the back lot.

Since it has become better known the pricing has become competitive and care is needed not to be carried away, it is all green stock and you do need an appreciation of potential to make it worthwhile.

The Friends do organise a selection of better stock and slabs for the festival of the tree in August, still green in the main, other retailers there have drier stock.

Thanks for the info Chas, will look at that site later.

Steve :)

For those interested the next 2 are on 13th July & 10th August

Thank you or everyones comments...

All of those look nice pieces. Thats very impressive for a first bowl.

How long have you been turning?

JT

I've had the lathe for 3 years, but during that time have done next to no turning. I love it when I get time, but renovating a house has taken priority...I was working it out and I reckon the lathe has seen less than 40 hours use since new. Still, house is done now so hoping to get more lathe time in the near future. :D I will keep you posted!

I should come clean about the first bowl...the frst thing I did was a 2 day course with Melvyn Firmager...great learning experience with a really knowledgable and interesting guy...and resulted in a very tidy 'first' bowl... Theres been quite a few to the burn pile since then...

I really want to get more into hollow forms, some of the pieces george (cornucopia) posts are just beautiful...some day...
