Well I got a new job on Monday (well new IT Contract) and I've been frugal whilst between contracts so I treated myself. I've been wanting to see the new Ryobi Brushless 18v drill but having seen the box today I've decided it's not quite where I want to be.
So I went to a local specialist who stocks Makita, Dewalt, Festool and Milwaukee
I was mainly after an 18v Drill Driver ideally not to big and heavy but still with plenty of power.
I quickly dismissed the Milwaukee as it was bulky and felt very chunky - probably perfect for a builder.
I then also dismissed the Festool - as much as I love my Festool kit I just thought it was too expensive compared to £150 Makita and Dewalts.
I spent quite a bit of time looking at both of these. I got down to a choice of £300 for a Makita with 4ah batteries and an impact vs £300 for Dewalt with 2ah batteries but was brushless.
In the end I opted for the Dewalt. They were smaller and lighter than the Makita and obviously I can get bigger batteries.
One thing that is a bit odd is that it has Bluetooth batteries. It's a bit gimmicky but might have a benefit. I like the idea that I can deactivate the tools from my phone to stop anyone playing with them. I also like that my phone gives me an alert when the batteries are charged. You can also set it to deactivate the batteries when they are taken out of range and there is also a feature to allow someone to borrow them but I'm not sure what that does! As I say it's a bit gimmicky but not completely pointless.
We'll see how they go.
