hi anyone
just joined UKW and would like to know if anyone knows of any woodworking club in the Nottingham area
that may do scroll work, I have never done much woodworking of any sorts but would dearly like to make
some scrolled toys for my grandson, and make woodworking a hobby for my retirement .

Hi Graham

Hi Trev and welcome to the madhouse that is UKW. Got any question ask away as I am sure that there will be others who can offer sound advice. Oh, we do like WIP's with lots of pics :) Can't help with scrolling I'm afraid.

Hi Trev,

Welcome and thank you for stopping by to see us.

If it's mainly scrolling that you are interested in it may be better to post your request on the scrolling forum scrolling-scroll-saws.html just in case fellow scrollers only visit that one.

Although joining a group may be of use socially it shouldn't hold you back if you can't find anywhere as scrolling is fairly straight forward to pick up and you can control your own progression. They have lots of places in the States where you can join scrolling groups but I'm not aware of anywhere over here that offers the same facilities.

I have a few PDFs and stuff that might help you out as a new scroller so if you'd like to PM me an email address I'll send you some stuff.

. . . . and, post any queries you have on the scrolling forum as there are a lots of peeps over there with a lot of experience who would only too willing to help you out.

Oh, and let us know how you are doing by posting lots of pictures

Hi Trev, two places you could try close to Mansfield are, Men in sheds at Blidworth, not sure if they have any scrollsaws or the Community Workshop at the Dukeries Academy in Ollerton. I know they have a couple of scollsaws.

Hey Lofty, how do you know the Dukeries CW? I help out there on a Tuesday and am on the management committee.
We do indeed have a couple of scroll saws, but at least one of them requires a bit of attention at the mo. It's been a while since they were used, at least any time I've been there.

I also saw an advert for Men In Sheds in Morrisons, Kirkby, the other day. Starting up soon apparently. I meant to take the details after I'd done my shopping but I forgot until I was outside.

Hi Steve,
I got to know about the Dukeries workshop in the late 90's when started going to the woodturning club that meets on the first Wednesday evening of the month. What is the problem with the scrollsaws? If it's the Delta then I may be able to help in making it better. I have two and a friend has one and we've managed to keep ours going.
The men in sheds in Blidworth has been going for a while now so maybe they're starting another one up in Kirkby.

happy scrolling

HI Steve
I don't use them myself, but IIRC the mechanism that holds the blade in is broken and you need three hands to overcome it. I can't remember if it's the Delta or the other one.
Several of the machines need attention at the mo. There is a drum sander that we are trying to refurb. One of the loading clips has been repaired but really needs replacing. Alan is looking at that. I need to order some new loadings, we don't have cloth-backed abrasive, only paper, and they don't work. The bandsaw is most obstreperous machine I've ever come across and needs a good fettling as well as some Tuffsaws blades instead of the ones we've been buying for years.
But it's a great place that serves the local community in all sorts of valuable ways.

Hi Steve,
I'm not surprised the machines need attention I think that most if not all were there back in the 90's.
Yes I agree it's very beneficial to the community and needs to be kept going.
happy scrolling
Steve
