Hi all

Latest efforts...

Purpleheart fountain pen

DSC_0054.jpg

Segmented roller ball in purpleheart, mahogany, jarrah and ash - would have preferred it to be a fountain pen but it's a birthday present for my son and he doesn't like fountain pens (!)

The segmented one was fun - not an original design but still learnt a lot doing it and had to make a cross-cut sled so expect more segmented efforts to follow!

two belters there stuart, i must admit, i would never have guessed purpleheart for the fountain pen.
well done mate..

They're great, Stewart ! 8)
The segmented one looks very intricate ... I've never done any pens, how does the 'sled' thing work then ?

If you were to ask for a preference, I'd say the 'solid' one shades it for me.... but "just"... It has a very classy look to it.

Great :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks, Jenx
the sled is nothing very intricate - a piece of plywood, about 20 by 24 inches with a fence at the back and a clamp to hold the blank still while it's sliced.
I'll put a picture of it up tomorrow - will make it clearer than my words can.

Very nice, I am looking at doing a fountain pen and have just had a request for slim line purple heart, hope mine turn out as nice as yours. :)

way to go stewart, great looking pens.where did you get the kits from
and what finish did you use.

I'm with Alun on this one - both excellent, but personally the solid one just edges in :D
From the fountain pens I've seen on here, they all seem to have a "classy" look to them - you lot are almost tempting me to try making some..

Very very nice Stewart, you are becoming the main man, into segmenting, you must (when you have time) show us a picture "how to."
Would love to give it a try!!! this hobby is endless

Hi Stewart,
Excellent work, I particularly like the fountain pen.

I still can't decide if I like segmented work or not (and that in no way detracts from the work you have shown us). The jury is still out!

Malc :D

Pics of the sled to follow.

I know what you mean about segmenting, Malc, there are some pretty ugly combinations possible and it can detract from the wood, I think. Still, this one was fun and I'll definitely do some more.

ThomasB I have another blank ready to go so I'll try to take some WIP pictures.

well done Stewart, Lovely pens ,have tried a few ,not much success i'm afraid.Segmented looks very good out of my class though.but can give endless design ideas. REgards Boysie
