New Old Plane

There has been a lot of talk about No.5 1/2 Record and Stanley planes of late. Must be good. Did some research, checked out Ebay, looked at what I had and found a 4 1/2 from 1968 bought new. So I went looking at the local car boots on Bank holiday Monday. Saw a nice corrugated base No.4, but I have a nice scraped one that I use at school.Saw an old No.3, for loadsamoney, but no No.5 1/2. Found one on Ebay that was not in with the regular ones as the title was slightly different. I contacted the seller for more details. A prompt reply assured me that all was well. It was a pickup only sale, local to me. I was offered more photos, they were good. I bid, I won, I collected. Very nice, very clean. All mine and no postage to pay, saving about a tenner. Watched the others go for more than double the price plus postage.

Superb Mike...I am a great one for getting great deals and it seems you got one there my friend.

It's always a bonus when the seller is nearby....some of the postal costs floating about begger belief and make the deal pointless.

Interesting to see the "Roundel Blue" in so many shades there...just proves a point!

The very blue plane, 3rd from the right is a No.5 Record Marples. It has a Stanley frog with the 3 piece lever At the moment a pair of plastic handles, and has been cut down by 50mm from the rear. It is a thick casting, but was damaged behind the tote and has been picked for spares over the years. A broken Stanley donored the parts yesterday. The balance is great and after a few hours of rubbing down the sole and squaring the sides it is a really nice plane to use. I have also today improved my Dads old No.5 Stanley into another quality tool. This never felt correct, but a few hours of rubbing down on foot wide oxide sheets, going through the numbers, finishing off with P1000 has done the job. The frogs have been fettled and reassembled with care. I will have a long Tormek session and grind up the irons and polish the back irons. I have a few Japanese laminated steel blades that cut and polish Ebony fingerboards. A few sets of handles will be made, probably from Bubinga. I admired the highly polished plane that was on here a while ago. Looked like a labour of love.
