hi all i have been looking online for a new motor (If the old still doesnt work), machine mart has the best offer but what i would like know can i up the horse power or shall stick the same power rates as the old one

No reason why you can't Tony, as long as it fits the existing lathe. Or you can make it fit. Just please be careful that you don't put a piece of timber on that taxes the actual lathes capabilities once you have upgraded the motor.
 
on the new motor front what is the channel that runs down one of the shaft for?

That sounds like you mean the KEYWAY Tony ...
When a Pulley is mounted onto a shaft, sometimes it has a corresponding rectangular channel, into which a 'Key' is slotted when the shaft & motor are assembled together.
It effectively locks everything into place.

Its not always that kind of arrangement, but its a common one :D :wink:

i found today how old my motor is its 45 years :shock: not wonder it wearing out . i could get recondition one for £200 or get a new motor for £70
oh and the motors are still made but the company is based in india
