I am finally taking the plunge and getting a new lathe =D> (I think the treadle has worn out on mine :D )

We are on a limited budget!! I am looking at another draper. It is the
WTL 95 550w and I have seen it at £285.

It seems to have all the things I look for, anyone got any other ideas? bearing in mind the budget!

Mornin' Mrs S.

Looks to me as if the Draper is a clone similar to the Perform CCL Variable Speed Woodturning Lathe if this is the case, you can save yourself a few quid if this is the type of lathe you want.

Whichever you end up with don't forget to post a few photos. Especially of any straight stemmed goblets.

I have got my eye on the CCL, and it is on clearance right now as well!
but I haven't seen one close up yet so can't really discount it.
The Draper is VERY solid! and I need something sturdy for my green wood turning. Also under consideration is Scheppach DMS 900.

I know most people seem to have, or have had the CCL so it is tempting... but it will have to last me LONG time and needs to be suitable for my needs for a few years to come. any further suggestions? :-k

Again if you look carefully I believe the Scheppach is another clone on the same series of lathe. Never having owned one of these machines I can't say anything about them as I have had no personal experience with them, but I wouldn't discard all the comments made on the forum about the CCL.

Apart from the advantage that the Perform is going cheap at the moment the aftersles service from Axminster is worth thinking about. Unless you are thinking of branching out to big stuff this lathe will cover most of the things that you are likely to do for the next few years. Having said that there are a lot of lathes out there at about the same price and so I guess it is really up to you. For the money that you are quoting there is the Fox with a 1 1/2 hp motor and a 16" turning over the bed (here) Don't know what Fox are like personally but at least one proffessional on here has used them so maybe he'll get back

There's always some good stuff on ebay - and particularly at the moment.

Chris.

I don't know if you have tried looking for anything second hand, but you might get a better machine if you do (although sorting transport can often be an issue).

Cheers,

Dod

Thanks for that chaps :) I am now being drawn to good old CCL.

I have thought of secondhand but the only ones I have found local enough are not what I wanted, same with ebay, either too far away, too expensive or not what I am looking for.

I shall have to sleep on it ..... not literally !! .. that would be uncomfortable!

Sorry...just going

I shall try pass over that last post!

I have had another problem just hit me. Nova chuck! at a quick glance I didn't see an adapter to fit the nova to the CCL. #-o

Mrs. S. I see you live in Yorkshire and Pete (Bodrighy) lives in Cornwall a good distance apart, if you x the milage by 10 I would recommend you stay that distance from Scheppach. Only my opinion you will probly get one who will disagree. Blister had a Fox I think for sale maybe not big enough for you. But you wont go too far wrong if you take the advise of most about Axminster or even the SIP. Best of luck, REgards Boysie who has had four lathes in 11 mnts.   :D

Thank for that Tam. We are going to visit a local pro wood turner tomorrow, I shall throw all these ideas at him and see if I can sort myself out!

Thank you gentlemen! I have just ordered the CCL :D ... and got sorted for pen turning

p.s. lathe arrived today \:D/ will try fit some turning in over the weekend and post again once i've had a test run.

I have been following this thread carefully....

.... and I too ended up ordering a CCL from Axminster. 8)

Hi,
I am NOT trying to put anyone off!
I have had a CCL for just coming up to 2 years. I have had a broken speed control pulley and just this week my headstock bearing has gone phutt!
I wish you well with yours. I sometimes think my second name should have been JONAH though.
I am now looking out for a new lathe. Interested in Record CL1VS. Any comments?

Still drooling over the
F46-719.jpg
Fox 46-719.
at about £275, it still looks a good deal.....

I've to get my little Perform CCSL down to my dad, and get myself anew toy - and still like the look of the Fox above.

Still got to 'negotiate' with the "Minister of Finance & Fun", and get it 'past' her scruitineering.... but I'll manage that ( eventually ! )

The CCL is tempting too though ... been watching this with interest... keep the updates coming, Mrs S .... interested to read how you get on :D
