New Kitchen Build

I have just begun to build our long awaited kitchen after having built the small extension on the side of the house to allow a downstairs toilet and reshape the kitchen. Knocking down a kitchen/dinning room wall and having to move all the services Plumbing, heating and wiring over to a side wall. Will show some of those pics later.

It did take rather a time to source the 18mm Veneered plywood but managed to find a supplier down in Essex. It has taken me a while to plan the layout having looked in all the kitchen catalogues to get ideas, what is the main problem is trying to build the cabinets in an 18ft by 9ft garage workshop and of course trying to store the cabinets once built.
Here are some photo's of the cabinets and the layout set out on the patio, these units will allow a big breakfast bar top that will also house the hobbs. The extractor has been modified to allow it to be fixed to the bulkhead in the ceiling and again will show some pics of that later.

First couple of photo's show the plinth and have yet to cut a couple of openings in the plinths to have some drawers to give more storage space although they will not be to obvious when installed.

So here goes with a first time kitchen build.......

Just about to buy the Tulip wood for the face frames and doors and get started on making those will keep posted with new photo's as I progress.

looking good so far do you know what hardware you are going to use i know you said you was going to put drawers in plinth good idea, i do like adjustable legs though, face frames and shaker door in popular are you going to paint ? and the ply could i be cheeky and ask what you paid for a sheet i guess its 8 by 4 sheets the reason for being nosey is im due to do my kitchen this year once i have a plan

Blum Hardware but not ordered yet, Yes going to paint and with regard to adjustable legs I would rather build plinth bases and have the extra drawer space as our kitchen is rather small. The plywood was around the £90 per sheet for double sided ASH and that was with collection so not cheap, I have also bought 12mmm ASH faced plywood single sided but from another source as the guy I got the 18mm from only sold the 12mm in packs of 16 and I didn't need that many, but using 18 plywood in my opinion is better than using mdf in a kitchen, even with the mdf being moisture resistant and cheaper.
There are not many suppliers able to get 18mm Veneered plywood and you have to buy in packs of 10, I did use 18mm birch plywood for the bases from B&Q as this was not any cheaper from the other suppliers.

One reason I have used so may screws is that I have 1000s of pocket hole screws and another reason is that although the 18mm plywood was expensive it is not veneered birch plywood that is used unlike in America where you get the best quality plywwod that is veneered so needed to pull the joint tight right along the edge, again the screws are to make sure it dosen't move when the granite worktops are put on top. I would rather put to many screws in now rather than wish I had when the kitchen is finished.

An unusual order of doing things, first you build the cupboards and then build the kitchen around them =D>

Looking good mooee. I make quite a few kitchens like this and prefer to use steamed beech as it is harder and more stable paints well and only costs a little more. It might be worth considering if you havent bought the timber yet

Thanks for the comments, I hadn't thought of using any other wood so will have to look at steamed beech I would rather pay a bit more and get a bit more quality. Hope to be getting wood this week so I can get the face frames done and painted and get the units fitted.

Yes it does look like I have fitted the units and then built the kitchen but that unit has been such a pain as I have the pipework running down the back to supply the loo basin to hide all the services and then place the tall cooker housing and fix in place, the wall looks a bit battered but I needed to get an extra couple of mill so as to slide the cupboard in, once fitted there will be a sheet of coloured glass fitted to cover all of that wall.

Where did you go for your wood ?

I usually use Gard and Sons, nr Chelmsford, prices seem OK, and they can be pretty helpful.

Just an update with the kitchen build, all face frames now made and getting ready to paint (spray primer and undercoat), and then hand paint last coat when installed. I also have to spray the inside of the cupboards with Lacquer Water based.



Just a couple more photo's of the face frames made from Maple, I managed to salvage a lot of Maple from an office refit that was going to get skipped, all new wood piles of it so was told to help myself, and I did. I have been lucky with some of the office building sites that I have worked on clearing loads of wood in the past that would have been skipped. I also managed to get some 50mm European Walnut all about 500-700mm wide and all about 1.2 metres long in all about 45 boards, trouble is it's filling up the 6 metre container that I have.
