Hi

Am still a newbie at the 'woody' enterprise, although was previously on this forum when living in france - to where I am returning in about 7 weeks time!!
I found difficulty in finding tools of any quality whilst in france and am looking to buy a couple of bits before the return, so ....

I would like a good general purpose hand plane and tenon saw at the very least, have you any suggestions (and yes, cost will be a consideration unfortunately)? Also, what other bits do you find you cannot be without?

Veritas Low Angle Jack, without a doubt.

$US219 direct from Lee Valley. Cost me $US51 surface mail to NZ (air would have cost twice as much), and I'd imagine around that figure to the UK/France. $US219 falls well below the limit where NZ customs charge VAT, and I believe it's just below UK's VAT threshold. I don't know what the French charge at the border.

If that's over your budget then a second hand Stanley/Record No.4/5/5½ from Ray Iles would be the way to go.

Cheers, Vann.

Salut Steve, bienvenu sur le forum,
Je continue en anglais pour que ce soit correct sur le forum (frenchie aussi et accro a ce forum).

Hi steve,
1----
Veritas is a nice plane for sure IMHO the most versatile available new today. If you're in uk now, take the advantage to buy second hand tools, as the shipping will be more expensive, once you get back in France.
Or as suggested you can look for and old #5, also called sometimes the jack plane, and it earns its name.
For saws, I have Lie-Nielsen tenon saw and like it.

You'll find saws as well as handplanes easily in this country (I mean UK). They're also some second hand tools shop, and you hardly find any in France.

UK web sites are also worth it, especially of you're in uk, as postage is low and VAT lower than here, really worth checking !
I always do a benchmark before buying (not time saving but money saving for sure :p)

2---
For information,
I've ordered many tools in us and canada. the exchange rate makes it a good deal for us in France, at first sight. But you pay for postage, and custom taxes as well as VAT (droits de douane et TVA) and some exchange rates fees by you bank. You remember that over here VAT is 19.6% ! Plus Custom charge, are high. If I do remember I must have paid
for the LA Jack Veritas, something like 30 to 40 $ for postage, and around 20 or 30€ of custom charge. Plus around 4 or 5 € for my bank.
Also avoid UPS as they also charge an additional 15€ of "frais de dossier"/handling files fees (which I consider is a theft !).

So the basic for buying in america is the fx rate must be higher than 1.4 or 1.45 €/$, and sometimes you're lucky and customs don't charge you. To help luck, favor some small postages (low values), consider fragmenting your purchases (even if it might cost more).

Once you have done all this, you end buying some tools directly around here. But for the LA Jack, even with all this it is still advantageous to buy it abroad (not the case for example for the jointer plane in the same brand).

Whatever, most sites abroad (LN, LV, ...) are really professional, and answer your inquiry about postage fees, etc.

A little out of subject but worth saying to help you choose where to buy.
Salut.

salut graween
merci pour les reseignement, mais puisque ma francaise est complete cr4p .........

Yeah, in UK at the mo' moving back to southern 71 beginning of octobre. It is now clear that I shall not have a workshop for about a year, so what had been a quest for 'stuff' in a fairly short space, now doesn't need any sweat breaking over it. Shame. I was looking forward to playing with 'new stuff'.

I will be returning to UK 3 or 4 times in next few months, hopefully with a full van. Therefore, as it would be churlish to return home empty handed....................
As you say prices in UK are preferable to those in france, and that is if you can find it in the first place.

Looking forward to the return, but the tooling I just know will be a bit of a prob.

cordialment

Has anyone had experience of Silverline tools?

I was looking at a #5 plane today priced at 22 something pounds and was told that the Silverline stuff is the equal to Stanley/Record and if so, at 22 GBP it has to be worth a try.

Stay clear...try something second hand either from Ray Isles or a decent second hand tool shop like Penny Farthing Tools - Rob

Hi Steve
I haven't tried a Silverline bench plane, but in spite of the price tag, what I have tried has proven very expensive for what it was as cost has been minimised by reducing quality of manufacture and materials - the former can often be sorted given free time, the latter cannot.

"cheap tools are the dearest you can buy"

With very few exceptions (dovetail markers for example) this adage holds.

The Chinese have recently started making some extremely good rip offs of Lie Nielsens (which are themselves copies of Stanley bedrocks), Rutlands are stocking them as Dakota A1 grade 'American' planes cheeky monkies, and I think Tilgear do them too. If you are on a budget but want something that you won't feel the urge to replace five minutes after you start using it, these might be a good option.

Alternatively DougB has a set of secondhand planes for sale, although not the best tools produced by these manufacturers they do look to be in good order and the money he's asking is sensible. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34685

I've got a No7 Silverline jointer.

Cost me £8.

It's great.

At making cauls for glue ups!

The sole is so concave you wouldn't believe.

Avoid at ALL COSTS.

Cheers

Karl

Thanks for the replies.

I agree, cheap is usually expensive so I will forget about the silverline and look at those you suggest.
