ps - My mother used to work for "Hawker Siddeley" in Bolton, something to do with circuit boards for missiles ?

Small world - I used to work there when it was British Aerospace, I worked on missile guidance systems. I'd tell you more but I'd have to kill you!

" changed out a lot of those Brook's and Brook-Cromptons on old Dravo & Powrmatic blow-air heaters in my time.. mostly 3ph jobbies like, but some 220/240v ones too.. sometimes didn't even change 'em, but got them rewound by the old "BERyL" ... British Electrical Rewinders Ltd .. they're gone now too.. they became part of Wyko, then Eriks UK i believe .. i'm out of that game nowadays, so have lost touch with it a little.. by by god, them old Brook's were good motors... the only reason the ones I changed had 'failed' was usually due to a poor setup of the machines overall.. badly aligned pulleys putting excessive strain on the motor shafts axially, or bad or no servicing of the heaters, giving rise to the gumming up of the big centrifugal fans the motors were powering, thus getting themselves all out of balance, and 'doing for' the motor that way... very seldom do I recall a Brook or Brook Crompton motor failing due to a fault with the motor itself.
Good solid beasties they were ! .... however, as usual.. I digress and go off rambling about un-connected past-life nonsense ! ... )

Fraid not - After basic and trade training I was at Upavon ( Wilts - now gone ) then based at Brize Norton, but mainly out of the country with that role ;-)

Me too, it should be good doing them both up. You mentioned dismantling it. Most of it comes apart very easily (I had to dismantle mine to move it). The only complicated parts are the headstock bearings but my brother changed one so I will ask him what's involved.

I'm considering having mine sand blasted and repainted by someone who knows how to paint (i.e. not me). It would be nice to have it looking like new. I'm very jealous of your motor (and I get the feeling Jenx quite likes it too ). I will end up with a more modern one and I will replace the switch as well as it is faulty.

I'm looking to do the same thing aswell. Spoke to my mate who sprays cars for the garage he works at and he said it would be no problem atall.

Any info on the bearings being dismantled would be great

Sawdust, if you want to keep it authentic look arounbd for a Brooks motor. This is just one site I found on a quick Google. I'm sure there are more around. There was one on fleabay but it's gone.
