Need some help/advice please!

Hi all, just found this site through Google as I need some advice! My father has recently died and was a keen woodturner in his spare time. He owned 2 (I think) lathes and various woodturning tools however I haven't the foggiest what any of it is! He has a shed full of it including a large amount of wood!! I've also found a huge pile of old woodwork/woodturning magazines in his house.

I now need to start clearing his house but don't know where to start in respect of getting rid of this 'stuff'. I am going to attempt to try to identify the lathes (I'm hoping to find a manual amongst his papers) but I just wondered if anyone knew of the best outlet to advertise/sell this stuff.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Sorry to hear about your Dad , its always a very sad time in life

If you know what some of the items are we have a For Sale section on the forum so you could list them

Most people would like to see photos with the advert as this helps to see the condition

Hello, thanks for your swift replies! Dad's house is in Reading, Berkshire.

If I can find the key to his shed (!) I will take some photos at the weekend and see if I can find out what he has in there.

Very sorry to hear Jotty - horrible. People on here tend to be very honest (and free - in a good way) in their views on the value of stuff in this sort of siutation. There are a number of people near(ish) to you and we have a couple of people on here who are very experienced in the pricing of kit so you should be able to get the help you need.
We're all also on the "slope" and apparently addicted to buying stuff (my particular problem is judging when I have enough wood, especially burs at the moment) so you've got a good audience too.

Hello Jo and sorry about your loss.

One day when I'm gone someone will be asking the same about all my toys and I know how difficult it is in these circumstances from my own experience.

To get the best return it very much depends on what you have.

If you can find someone nearby who can take a look that would be best, you don't want to lose out by underselling.

Just a thought, why don't you take up woodturning?

Once you've started I can guarantee you'll be addicted.

Silly me - I'd ignored the option of taking it up! Myturn and Melinda have an excellent point. There's many members on here who would be happy to show you how to start!

Sorry about your father.

You should try taking it up, worst case is you don't like it and delay selling everything for several weeks/months. Best case is you love it and have a huge head start because you have all the equipment that you are ever likely to need.

If you are determined to sell though as has been mentioned there is a for sale section on the site and pictures are the key.

Thanks for all of your replies. I went to dad's house today and had a good root in his shed. Apart from lots of sawdust(!) I managed to identify the following:

Viceroy DST Educator
Maxi 26 plus (and manual)
Elektra Beckum BAS 315 (and manual)
Coronet 'The Major' ??
Record Power RPM75 Morticer (and manual)
A circular saw (I think!)
Clarke Metalworker 6" Bench Grinder CBG 6RC
A shed full of wood, heaps of what look like chisels and lots of bowls, plates and goblets that he made.

There is also another contraption which I couldn't identify but tried to attach a pic last time and it didn't work, so will have another go at that!!

I will have to clear all of this stuff eventually so if anyone can advise on possible value I would be most grateful, or if anyone is interested in any of it let me know. I will probably advertise on the For Sale section here, I have taken lots of photos.

As for the suggestion of me taking up woodturning, what an interesting thought! Unfortunately I have neither the space or the time (I have two young daughters) but thanks anyway!!

Just found This for your bandsaw,from an older post,so might be worth doing something along these lines for the rest of the machines,to give you an idea of prices,also depends on the condition

Hey Jo,

Obviously it's not a good time for you at the moment so you have my sympathies.

Some of those machines are worth quite a bit of money, depending if they've been looked after well which I expect they have been. There are plenty of people here who would jump at one or two of them.

Unless you know what you're looking at many of the tools appear all the same and the blanks are just bits of wood. Probably a good idea to get someone to give you at least an idea of what they are and how much they might be worth.
