Exeter Crown Court heard some of the property was whisked up the M5 for disposal in Bristol but nearly £50,000 of goods was sold to undercover police officers who were running a second hand shop in Torquay.

The above newspaper report brought a smile to my face.

But not to mine, the way you've quoted the item out of context. Perhaps you should have added, for completeness and accuracy, from the same story:

"Some of the property was taken to Bristol and the rest was sold to the undercover police who had set up the second hand shop South Coast Electricals in Torquay market as part of Operation Boston."

Or, perhaps it's just me?

Ray.

I read it the same way, without the snipped bit. But I didn't get the joke, it just sounded like a good sting operation.

Must be my old, cynical nature but the first quote implied to me that police officers were illegally selling goods to the value of £50000, for their own benefit. The quote Ray used put it into an honest context.

Yes, the extract in DWs original post made it sound as though the police were working some kind of fiddle and had been found out.

Cheers

I guess I am more cynical about DW's mischievousness. It said "sold to undercover policemen", and the rest seemed to follow naturally enough.

Wasn't DW just highlighting the fact that if you just read the headline you are very likely to get the wrong end of the stick, quite often when reading a newspaper article, the more you read, it becomes less dramatic than the sensational headline suggests.

I am tempted to start a competition for The Wooden Spoon Award.

Actually it would be two competitions. First to make the spoon, second to award it to the person who is judged to have been the biggest stirrer. Both competitions to be judged by members
