Morning all,

Ok so we were doing natural edge bowls with wet logs last night at nightschool, and mine was brilliant, the edges all lined up perfectly, the outside was lovely ( was shown a nice sheering cut for wet work, the flute at 45 degrees, pointing right into the work ) - with a nice short spigot that would be removed at the end.

though i would just give one more finishing cut to the inside, ( already at about 1 mil thick ) - them boom.

alas, a good 2 hours of practice cuts.........

anyway here the candlestick i did last class.

Spalted beech, sanding sealer, and lavander smelling wax !

Mornin' Loz.

At least with this hobby you can easily make another natural edged bowl, but without the last cut this time.

I like the candle holder, the bead and fillets each side look just right for size, and all matching. I like the overall form, just think the thickest part of the tulip shape should be a little lower so as the inward curve would turn in quicker and match up better.

IME that tulip shape is one of the hardest to do properly, lots of folks say split the form in 3, which is what I think you have done. Personally I would have the thickest dia. at about ¼ of the tulip form, or even a little lower.

But hey! I ain't knocking your work, your coming on leaps and bounds, IMO.

Thanks Guys,

Re the Tulip, What you describe Tam, is what i was trying to do - i could even see it in my head, but was unable to tranfer to the wood for some reason !

Loz

Still trying !

The first time I went to our club 3 guys lost their natural edge bowls! T'was an eye opener.

Nice candle stick. Must keep practising my beads and coves

Was just me last night ! quite embarrassing, especially as i was mentoring one of the other guys that had missed the start of the class.

What a bu**er Loz

The candle holder is a nice balanced shape.

As Tam says its worth experimenting with the proportions on the tulip shape. I've been playing with bits of beech firewood looking for the best proportions, lots of samples :) :) :) and I think I prefer to drop the bulge lower than 1/3rd. Its all a matter of personal taste I guess.

Regards,

Mike C

Should have mentioned this earlier Loz. #-o

When you get the widest diameter as high as you have on a 'tulip shape' a good saver idea is to bring the lower edge in anyway and finish the shape. Which of course leaves you with a spare piece of wood beneath the tulip. Once you have the bottom shape right, make a small fillet. Then turn a nice cove in this spare piece, with a fillet top and bottom. Make the top fillet 2/3rds (approx) the width of the bottom fillet.

Then go on into the foot, no one knows the difference. You now have a nice tulip sitting on top of a cove pedestal. Everybody will think that is what you where aiming for. Then as all admire your masterpiece, you of course tell them you did make a mistake, but have corrected it.

Thank Tam,

I'll remember that next time I deviate from the plan !

Damn finishing cuts   .

The candlestick is groovy Loz :D What on earth is lavender smelling wax? Is it meant to smell of lavender or is it a case of it just does?

Are you saying that you had the bowl down to 1mm thick? I'd have been scared to even sand it if so. More like a lampshade

Pete

P.S. The candlestick is really good, like the sshape. You do realise that they usually come in opairs so you need to make another one identical don't you

Yep - its was less than 2 mil anyway ! - Found the wet wood much easier to get very thin ( and thus too thin ! ) , but you don't get that warning siren, the screetch of vibrating dry wood just before it pops.

The wife asked for a matching candlestick, I had to tell her i couldn't get another piece of Beech with spalting in the same place !

But i'm up for the challenge !
