Hello everyone, I've not had much time for turning this last week but managed to get outside to the shed yesterday and have a little go :) .
I decided to go for an end grain natural edge bowl, its about 9" wide and very thin(scarily thin  ) .........

click for big piccys

The first picture is fairly accurate for colour. I lost a little bit of bark right at the end of finishing, it shot off like a bullet and I couldn't find it to glue it back on  . Its finished with two coats of sanding sealer sanded back with 600 grit and woodwax22 over the top and buffed off the lathe.
I don't know why I keep making end grain things with this ash its bloody hard work

Comment /critique much appreciated.

cheers JT

That looks great Johnny,
A little difficult to see clearly on the 2nd & 3rd photo due to the dark background, but the 1st photo looks very good.
Very well turned.

Looking good JT :D
I think the end grain turning gives a very good effect, when the timber can be plain looking.Plus it gives the looker summat to do when looking at it :D counting the rings

That's very nice JT I'm amazed at the colour.
You say it's Ash  I'm using some ash at the moment and it's a heck-of-a-lot whiter than that.
Maybe it's that woodwax, i've never used that.

John, the pics are not too great, they were taken under a halogen light which 'oranges' things up a bit, it is indeed much paler

Nice work.

I like the small foot that the bowl sits on. It lets the form float and adds a delicacy which contrasts the structure of the bark edge. For me this give balance to the piece.

Thanks for the replies :D , must have got something right with the look of this one, Mrs.JT has claimed it and popped it on the side in our dining room!

Mrs.Sliver, the bark seems to stay on ash very well, I've made several items from it now with the bark left on and this is the only piece any has come off at all.

Mark, thanks for those words :D Delicacy with the weight and thinness against the bark was what I was trying for, its nice when someone says back to you what you were thinking.

Cheers JT
