In a trailer load of "free to uplift" firewood I collected recently, there was a large solid oak table top, which was nice, but also some smaller timber that I'm trying to identify. My digital camera is US at the moment, so can't post a picture (even if I was clear how to do this), but looking in Lincoln's World Woods in Colour, I've narrowed it down to Jarrah, Macauba or African Padauk. The heart wood is a superb red-brown colour, while the sapwood is very clearly separated and a pale brown/yellow. It planes up after a few strokes to a superb glossy finish and even long thin pieces are incredibly difficult to break. It looks as if it was originally used as some sort of packing or fencing (some of the bits are off the edge of the trunk), so it must be cheap where it originates.
The pity is that none of the bits was big enough for anything but pen blanks. So if anyone wants some for the cost of postage, PM me
