Literally a stone plane. I think drag is the English term. It's used to flatten soft stone in a very similar way to a woodworking plane.

There's some interesting stuff on the French site, and it seems to go pretty cheaply.

A pretty one

An ugly one

This one is very interesting - I might go for this one. It's a Sargent.

And this one has a toothed cutter, presumably for veneering?

There's a lot of Peugeot Frères stuff for sale, including coffee grinders and things you (I) wouldn't think of. It might be interesting to look at the history of their planes some day.

France is a bit of a woodworking timewarp. There are still woodie rebate planes available in the DIY sheds, and I have seen wooden jointers in builder's suppliers. Some good Stanley chisels, and a lot of toot. Can't remember the name of the metal planes - something like Artex... Darex? I bought one of the block planes a few years ago before I knew the little about planes that I do now. It was a proper little pig. Absolutely rotten. Literally - it rusted in about 10 minutes.
