We recently stayed at a very pleasant cottage in the Lake District for a week. As well as having some very nice old furniture, it had a few decorative items around including this:

Does anyone know what it is? And an ID on the wood?

I bet somebody here will know!

Andy.

That looks like an authentic Oak midget stretcher to me :D

I saw something similar once being sold as a dough carrier?

I think its a stretcher but perhaps for carrying a barrel or a sack of grain.

I would say it's a dough carrier/bowl used to transfer dough from the dough proving bin to the work/kneading table.

Thanks everyone. I guess it is for dough - googling 'wooden dough bowl' brought up several similar ones. Nicely made item though.

I would still love to see Frodo and Samwise carrying Bilbo on it though :D
lol winner!

I'm not sure about the scale of it but if it's to be lifted by two people I have some faint recollection that it might be for butter. Just for moving about medium to large quantities of it. It wasn't something you could carry in your hands.
