Can anyone shed any light on this?

Small%20plane%201.jpg

It's just under three inches long. I found it in a junk shop a while ago. I use it now and again for hollowing out finger holds and things like that.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether originally it would have been used for a specific trade. It's a nice little thing and someone went to a fair bit of trouble to make it so presumably they were expecting to use it a fair amount ... just curious!

Cheers,

Marcus

Hi Marcus,
Its a very nice little compassed hollow plane, almost dertainly made by a ptternmaker or possibly a luthier; looks like rosewood.
Good luthiers tool.
If you want to sell it.......
Cheers,
Martin

It's not typical of a Luthiers thumb plane although I suppose one could use it for that purpose.

Hi,

Its a really nice plane, coachmaking etc.

I think Bugbear's suggestion stands up best. It's too small and delicate to be used in joinery. More likely someone with offcuts of nice rosewood and the skill to make an extra tool for a special job.
Maybe even for finger pulls etc like you use it for now, Marcus!

But what's the story on that toolchest?

Andy

Thanks for your replies! I would be interested to ear about that tool chest too....

Cheers

Marcus
