My waterfall river tables

In my previous post ‘My Chair’ I mentioned it was designed from practice bends from another project.
A few years back I came across river tables as we all did ! And some mitred them at 45 deg and call them waterfall river tables. That design frustrated me … the 90deg sharpe edge didn’t seem I keeping with the style. So the challenge developed to produce a gentle curved waterfall resin table . I got to refer to them as “Stream bent flow tables” learning about steam bending wood then manufacturing the machines took a while but eventually got results. Developing a method to apply the resin in curve was another frustrating challenge

Wow, they are amazing. Like you said, I've also never liked that hard 90' sharp bend. I think you have come up with a brilliant design. How did you pour the resin? or is that your secret

Nicely done. I can't remember ever seeing steam bent wood with the bark on, so really nicely done! Have you ever tried to do one with both ends bent?

Unfortunately the way I designed the bending device I couldn’t do a second bend, well I could have if I had cut a slot in my work bench top to maintain the strength of the joint there are about 30 50mm ‘secret’ stainless screws going through the bark into the wood

Basically temporarily bonded 1mm PETG sheet on both sides and filled from one end. But as you can imagine things like this never go without a hitch ….

Yep, ive done a couple of resin tables, first one was a steep learning curve, second one still had a couple of things that tried to screw me over
Practice makes perfect!
One thing that sped me up was orbital wet n dry..... yes, water and 240v isnt clever. I just use a spray bottle and apply a little as it needs it. Battery and 110v sanders are available

I am not a real fan of river tables but you have gone the extra mile with those. The bent bark edges are a step above the rest. I could just about get along with the one in the first picture.

haha ingenious, I've never tried a resin table but it is on my bucket list of things to do. The videos I've seen show a blowtorch or heat gun being used over the resin to pop any air bubbles, did you do something similar or wasn't it a problem?

Stunning work there, deserving a good write up in F&C imho.

This style of furniture is on my bucket list, but I do often use resin mixed with metallic powder as filler on "rustic" timber.

I tend to fall into this camp too. At least I did until I stumbled across Blacktail Studio on You Tube. His use of black resin with darker timbers has converted me and this is now on my list of projects.
