Hi
I'm very much a newbie, this is my first post, although I have been an avid reader of all the intersting info on this site for a year or more. I've just taken delivery of my latest parcel of goodies from Axminster; included in the latest "haul" was a low angle jack from LN, No. 62. (I used to smirk to myself when I first came across this site and the references to "slippery slope", well I have arrived!). First off, I was well impressed with the fact that the plane was on special at Axminster so it had to be good. The tool itself is a lovely piece of engineering (as always with LN, I already have a No. 7 and an edge plane, No. 97 from them) and I'll put it through its paces later this evening. However I have one small niggle- I think the brass screw on the knob (for adjustment of the mouth opening) is very small in diameter and I wonder if this is prone to shearing off (if abused or overtightened by the unacustomed)? I would have prefered to have seen a larger screw or perhaps a steel screw in this location, any thoughts on this?

Welcome, C!
I've had my #62 for a few years - not experienced any problems with it. Just a darn good plane :D
Philly :D

I don't have this particular plane, but I do know it. The thread size used should pose no trouble. The only abuse that would cause it to fail would be if you would start pounding it with a large piece of wood or a hammer or so. But who would do that

And welcome to the forum carpenteire!

It does look a little small, but I have had no problem over many years.

David

Thanks for the feedback folks, I had some fun earlier this morning taking some test shavings off some oak offcuts I had lying around. Now I've got to go tell my dear wife that I've had a reply from the author of 3 of my more favoured craft books! :D
