My least favourite job.....

So I've just taken delivery of this little lot (approx 16 cu/ft) of Tulipwood (American Poplar) - 50mm x random widths x 2.45m for those interested - £22/cu/ft approx.

Now the fun (not) starts.

It's all destined to become doorlinings. I have a contract with a local small developer who'll only use tulipwood linings @ 38mm thick (!!?)

Every month or six weeks an order comes through for between 10 and 20 linings, always weird sizes.

I know I should be grateful for the work, and it pays well, but it's just the unadulterated mind numbing tedium of it. Noisy, boring, blah blah. I hate it.

I'm guessing we all have jobs that come along every now and then that we all hate.

Share my pain and let us all know which jobs you CANNOT STAND!

Money is always good........ but I know what you mean. There are certain jobs which one just does for te sake of the money.

Seconded! and there's always a small pile of things I can't throw away :roll: but don't have there own place, so they end up cluttering the bench.

... and there lies the "secret" of a tidy workshop "A home for everything and everything in it". If everything has a home it's easier to be tidy than untidy and it certainly makes for faster working when you don't have to hunt for stuff.

For £50 you now have some really solid ear defenders - so it removes the noise issue - and also it can pick up your favourite radio station, or you can plug the converter into your ipod/phone etc, and now you can listen to music, books on tape, podcasts etc etc - which releives the tedium.

with a good audio book (which obviously you will pay full price for, rather than illegally download for free ) you can get through a whole day of dull work almost on auto pilot and it doesn't feel too bad at all.

Can recommend those ear defenders. Look like the same ones as Lidl occasionally sell for £30 if they ever come up. Mine take a pummeling and keep on going. Great radio but not the best attenuation but good enough for most machines.

Back when I was in IT and in my teenage years, I absolutely hated sitting watching the progress bar whilst Windows 95 installed. Ugh.

These days, in woodworking, I guess I'd have to say I can't stand anything to do with setting up bench planes. Probably because I don't really know what I'm doing, but I find it incredibly tedious!

British Radio is the best in the world! So many good podcasts too as well as net radio stations.

Firstly the sizes are all different, so it would get very expensive.
Secondly I've yet to find a merchant who can supply PAR that is actually straight, free of wind or twist and properly square.

It seems to me that they put it through a 4side machine without first straightening it - or at least not to the standards I require.

Also, if I order it PAR and it arrives two or three days later it could very well be cupped. I tend to machine it down in two or three stages to make sure that it has time to settle and minimise movement.
Believe me this client is extremely fussy and he will check every single board for being flat along it's length and across it's width. Then he signs it off, I get paid and if it curls up after that it ain't my problem.
