Hello all

I'm more or less a newbie on here, although I've been watching for a while and have actually posted 1 or 2 comments this is my first Project post.

I've been messing around with wood from quite a young age but since moving to France 8 years ago I've been busy on a large renovation project including adding a second floor to my home so I haven't had the chance to do any form of woodwork aside from that which was part of the construction project. This is a starter project, rather as a little challenge to myself to get back into the enjoyment of woodwork.

So here goes for th first project post...

I'm afraid I don't have any plans as such but it's basically a large oak veneer framed mirror. The interior of our home is fairly "minimalist" or "contemporary" type style so no fancy carvings or corniches here...

The structure will be made from 20mm laminated pine board - a common product here in France. So here goes for a few photos of the WIP (sorry about the poor quality, just quick snaps taken on my phone  )

Ripping the stock to width - wish I had a 2700mm rail ...

A lack of images here but here's a sketch of the frame profile

just a simple glue and screw "arrangment"

I made all four sides of the frame and adjusted to as close a fit as I'm capable of - then biscuit jointed the corners (sorry, I forgot to get pics of this step)

Next step is veneering with contact adhesive - not too sure if this is a "good" way to glue veneer and it's certainly not my favourite job. First side complete:

Next steps to follow....

The next steps...

My somewhat questionable clamping arrangment :|

And the result:

Now I have two of these:

Due to a lack of clamps (sound familiar, anyone?) I've chose to do this in two stages this being the first; the next step will be to join two of these together...

I don't know if anyone is interested in this WIP but i'd be glad of any comments or advice - never to old to learn :D

looks good so far, I would have probably made up a jig for clamping the corners so it uses less clamps, holds it square and is a damn sight easier to manhandle.
I'll be interested to see the next instalment

Yes, good suggestion Adam. In hindsight i would definitely do that as it was a bit of a struggle to get everything into place.

I'm not much good at this WIP game... I forgot to take pictures again #-o

Anyway, here's a couple of shots following the second stage glue-up. Sorry about the poor quality pics:

Now I just need to order the mirrored glass :)

Looks very nice to me. The mitres have pulled up tight from what I can see and on a 'simple' design like yours it all hangs on the mitres, so well done.

It's a law of woodworking that you can never have too many clamps.

Ever.

No matter how many you have.

Ever.

Thanks Zeddedhed - this is my first WIP post so feedback is much appreciated.

Fully agree with your comments on clamps - I even used this project as an excuse to add to my collection
