I went down the pics, saw the moulding and thought, "He's using up scraps." Then I saw the finished item - really nice!
I, too bought a Domino recently, so I'll have to get thinking about a memorable first project for it
Thanks Eric The Viking. All the bits of wood did come from the dog end rack. I'm very impressed with the domino but need to try and discipline myself on its use. The major of the time I'll stick with traditional m&t but it'll certainly have its uses. After making those first two I thought it'd be handy to have a larger deep throat one that I could actually use. I'd have probably been put off having to recut joints or reset the mortise and tenoner but the domino makes the thought of doing the job much easier.
Saturday I set out making some larger ones. I was making really good progress in the first 1.5 hours then started getting distracted by people coming in the workshop etc etc. The hope of finishing the 2nd pair on Saturday was shot to pieces but I did spend a lovely afternoon in the garden with some cider lol.
Here's a few pics of the 2nd attempts progress so far.
Cut off a slice the depth of the ovolo mould
Drill some holes to fit the stud joiner.
On the first ones I only used a nut which was a little sloppy so used a longer connector instead. I thought the mortimer would do a better job of cutting the shape
Glued the slice back on and shot a couple pins in the end to stop it sliding around. They'll get cut off when it comes to trimming the pieces for length. I forgot to lock the pillar drill so one of the holes for the studding was in the wrong place. I glued the slice on slightly to one side which kinda corrected my hole drilling balls up. It'll be removed by the ovolo so should go unnoticed.
The pieces were domino'd together
As I'm going to use them for working I've spaced the domino's so I can get 10mm studding in the middle and bolt all of it together. That's how the traditional ones I've got are reinforced so it's probably going to help hold everything together.
Once the mortices were done it was off to the planer to reduce the size of the middle piece.
That's the stage I'm at now.
I'm going to oil one to use as my working clamp but I think the other one I'll unfortunately have to burn to match the others.
The saw blades old blunt and knackered so I'm going to use it as a shelf. It'll be over head height so I shouldn't ever come into contact with it.
Need to get these finished so they don't spend months taking up valuable space !
Cheers
Coley
