Evening all.

Today was my first day on my companies new 'Flexible Futures' initiative (I work for KPMG and they have recently introduced this, which is effectively a reduction in working hours, with the associated reduction in pay, to try and steer us through these troubled fiscal times and come out the other end without redundancies), which gives me 8 free days (albeit without the pay for them) to take between now and the end of September, so while wife and bambino were out doing something 'secret' that I wasn't allowed to know about, that I would get a few hours in the workshop.

The shop hasn't really had much done since we moved in in December due to new baby requirements, so there are boxes of tools n stuff everywhere. I decided I need some kind of storage case for my hand tools, so with a single sheet of 12mm ply and a vague idea in my head, this is what came out...

Cut the ply into 3 equal pieces across the length with one of them for the back board.

One of the other bits cut into 2 long bits for the top/bottom and 2 shorter bits for the sides. Ignore the old PC and packing case, and all the other rubbish on the bench, I am trying to thin out my junk collection... ;)

And there is another pack of flooring to go down when I have positioned the chip collector and P/T

Here's a couple of pics of clamping up the sides and top for screwing together. There is no real joinery involved, or glue, just screws :D

Then I forgot to take any more pics, so here it is on the wall, with a view of the 'shop. I will do a full tour soon as I have got it a bit better organised :D

I just slotted the uprights at equal distances so I can slide in ply shelves should the plane collection morph. Got carried away and forgot that I didn't need to do both sides of the end uprights

So, how does it rate next to those other shoddy attempts from Waka and LN? ;)

Thanks for looking :D

Mark,

Very nice.

I think yours is a far more professional looking job than either of those other two.

By which I mean that your effort is exactly the kind of thing that a professional cabinet maker would knock up for his workshop to store his tools in.

Quick, functional and cheap!

I would definitely put some doors on it though, to keep the dust out. Glass in a hardwood frame would be nice. Rosewood, maybe?

You need some more tools. That dovetail saw looks very lonely in there.

Cheers

He's got them, he just can't find them!

Looking good Mark. Very productive (seeing as you didn't get out of bed til lunchtime)

Nice one mark - when it's filled you'll have to organise a bash so we can all come over and have a play....

Cheers

Yeah I thought about that but thought it might be a pain in the @rse as they would cover the windows when open, but if I used glass as you say then it might be okay.

On the other hand, I do so little in the workshop at the moment that dust isn't much of a problem ;)

Haha, as wizer says, I have loads of stuff to go in there, just can't find it all in the myriad of boxes strewn around the floor. That was really the object of this exercise, to get one place to store everything, get some boxes cleared which then gives me more space to put in some storage cabinets with worksurfaces. We moved in at the start of December last year and it's taken me this long just to get round to this, so we shall see... ;)

:D You saw that post then? I worked all weekend because we had an office Powerdown in our main Datacentre, so by the time I got home at about 5pm on Sunday I was knackered. Then I mowed the lawn, bathed baby and LOML said I deserved a pint so went down the local and sat in the sun for the last couple of hours drinking draught Spitfire. Then went home and crashed out.

On the train back to Watford again now, why oh why...

nah dont do that - when you see the light and come over to the round side (as is the destiny of all flat worlders :D ) the glass will only get broken by flying bits of wood.

Other than that nice build , and my kind of joinery - startlingly similar to the mdf bookcase creation i built at the weekend.

I like the fact that you've made the shelving system 'adjustable', so that you can adjust the unit to suit your tool collection as it grows - I see you're already sliding down The Slope with all those Veritas planes though!! :D  Ben Plewes has been talking about designing something similar (adjustable) in Good Woodworking recently.

Look forward to seeing the workshop tour, also. :)
