I told Mrs Scrums.......'....if I ever start turning mushrooms, have me put away....'

Well here they are, if customers want to buy them (and they do) then that's OK by me.

Hi Cris,
What a fine crop of mushrooms and a pleasing way to produce them on the bark. very nice job!
When I first started turning I produced loads of mushrooms with integral base but as we all seem to prefer different shapes mine tend to be longer and one of my friends refers to them as adult toys of a different name.
Now I like to study people when they look at the items on display and what they buy and I have sold a lot of mushrooms.

Absolutely love em, they look just great in that setting, hmm with have to try that myself.
A question if i may, when turning your mushrooms do you have the top at the headstock end or at the tailstock end, i ask because the last couple i have turned the top has been at the tailstock section and i have found it diificult.
Also, what size wood do you start off with.

I turn them with the heavy end, the top, nearest the headstock then you don't have so much whip. You can use any size wood really, I usually just use a piece of branch. Wood like yew and laburnum is ideal as you get the contrast with the colouring. The size depends on how big you want the mushrooms to be as you can leave the bark on the edge as Chris has. It's a great way to use up those odd ends we all get left with. Google mushrooms and toadstools and you'll see the variations in the real thing giving you loads of choice. Even if they split it doesn't matter as they often do in nature.

I think they look impressive set in the bark like that. three in each is just about right ...... not mushroom for any more .... I'll get me coat.

I think the standard way to turn them is cap at the headstock end, or at least the scraper tools for getting an undercut all seem to be ground for that.
I prefer to have it the other way round though and I made up a scraper/chisel from a 25p carboot firmer chisel - a bit less than the £24 for the kosher thing.
By the way, they're seated on a piece of driftwood (elm I think)
