Multico Morticer

I have just brought this item from ebay

It doesn't come with bushes or chisels.
I was told to avoid buying anything unless they come with bushes but i went against advice and brought it anyway.
Does anyone know where I could get bushes/collets to fit this machine? I know you can have them made but I don't know too many engineers thought maybe someone in here might know a thing or 2.
My mate Dave from timber team or Wadkin man as I call him said he knows mr multico but the guy is living in France and if all else fails he will source them for me, however I have the feeling it will be a lengthy process and possibly expensive.
I not collected it yet but will next week so if someone need spec I'll know next week.

Multico used to be in Harlow but now run operations from France.

I have a multico and could measure the bushings for you if you need dimensions to get them made up. Could be worth posting in the woodturning section as some of the guys have metal work lathes as well and may be able to make some for you.

I also bought some from my local tool shop and I think they still had a couple left on the shelf. I will have a look next time I pop in about a tenner each if I remember correctly.

I got a 2nd hand Multico a few months back, also off Ebay and fortunately it came with 2 bushes. The outside diameter is 25mm, and one is 20mm ID and the 19mm ID. They are 30mm long with a 30mm dia flange at one end which is a nominal 3mm wide. There's an 11mm hole in the side for clamping the drill bit.

They are very simple really and would be no bother to make - I wouldn't be able to reproduce the factory quality finish, but I doubt that would be critical.

I'm willing, but would very much appreciate it if you could take over - I've got rather a hefty workload just at the moment and cannot guarantee anything better than a one month turnround, unless I can find something in the junkbox to modify quickly.

I take it you have the bushes to copy - I was about to say I could draw them up, but to do that properly other than a pencil sketch would be just as time consuming.

Having just bought the machine, no doubt Nev wants to use it ! In fact, Nev, there's a thought - I could lend you my bushes, (which by the way are suitable for the Axminster chisels) if you have an urgent requirement as I have no use in the pipeline, nor currently time anyway. I bought the machine because it was locally available and will earn its keep some day.

If you can tell me where the 11mm hole is with respect to the top of the 3mm flange, I think I have everything I need from your earlier post.

Nev, I'll need the diameter of the shanks of the chisels you are going to use and how many bushes you need.

I'll need to start the job by 17th Aug to complete before I go on me hols.

Hi Rob,

the 17th is not a drop dead date but I know what it is like coming up to a holiday - jobs crawl out the woodwork and it turns out to be a panic in the last few days.

Also I am doing a job for a mate whilst I'm away in France and he has no tools to speak of so I want time to think through every stage of the job and what might go wrong and what I need to sort it out.

On the other hand, maybe I pack a big chisel, lump hammer and a twin pack of Gripfill - should fix most things

I looked at my axminster morticer bush today. The same dimensions as you quoted for your machine.
Seems the chisels tend to be 3/4" and 13/16" or 19.05mm and 20.64mm

Imperial shanks even for metric chisels :?:

Just spent the day doing much the same as you are talking about, though at least my mate does have some tools, and thank god looks after them and keeps them properly sharpened. Not as challenging as going to France, or as interesting - just 30 miles on the otherside of the River Forth, but as it is a garage conversion into a workshop, you never quite know what tools are required, or are available. Gripfill wouldn't have been required today, but I should have taken the power planner.

Do you still require the positional dimensions for the hole in the side of the bushes ?

It would be useful to check the position of the hole for the multico just in case it is different to my Axi.

Just wondering if there is some confusion over the bushes here. The floorstanding multico morticers do not have a chuck for the auger bit they have a turned bush/collet and the bit is secured with a bolt. What Bob seems to be talking about is the bush for the chisel shank. Ideally you need a set of bushes with holes that match the auger shank diameter.

Ooops - sorry, I didn't check to see quite what Nev had bought !! That's a bit bigger than mine!

The one I have is the bench mounted one and I wonder if the bits and pieces are interchangeable.

And there was Nev saying what great guys we are - I've certainly fallen flat on that one!!

Many apologies for building up your hopes ! As you say we did try, but missing the first trick doesn't help win the game!

Do I take it you're buying this from a dealer ? If it's from the user and he is holding onto the bushes and chisels, would it be possible to get some reasonably accurate measurements of the bushes so that if necessary they could be made for you ?

Its from a guy in Derby he's not a dealer it's from ebay, he just said it doesnt have bushes or chisels, I have no idea if he's keeping them secret or what. I will be putting details on as soon as i have the item, should be next
