Anyone heard of them, do you use them? A swizzle stick or more of a miniature pestle?

from the USA Family woodworking forum

I'm into quality single vintages and casks not concoctions so it's an unknown area for me.

somewhere between the two I think. Used to squash the object a bit rather than grind it up, or merely stir it. the back of a teaspoon would be a comparable, and the action much like squeezing out a teabag.

Hi Chas,
Swizzle stick? It was/is used for stirring drinks. Its been a long time since I last seen a wooden one,my dad had them in the drinks cabinet but that was not yesterday.

Peter.

In earlier (student!) years I do remember drinking vodka etc poured over 'smashed' lime, icing sugar and ice.

I seem to remember butt end of wooden spoons were the weapon of choice but this looks like a more elegant solution, if only any of us would have had the forethought to visit a craft stall as part of the evening preparations!!!!

I stand corrected - I'd simplistically seen cocktails and assumed stirring. They look pleasantly easy to make :)

It's like a gentler mortar and pestle. Some cocktails require that the ingredients be mashed up a bit in contrast to actually blending to a smooth consistency or having the bits floating around whole.

Some muddlers have spikes on the bottom a bit like meat tenderising hammers.

It simply appears to be a wooden Pestle but you know what Americans are like, if you don't know the name of something make a new one up!
