I've just bought myself a pillar drill, as (a) I wanted one for drilling, and (b) to also use for mortising.

My question is, will all mortiser bits fit, i.e. do they all fit using a drill-style chuck, or do I need to get special ones that can be fitted to a drill chuck?

I know it probably wont be as good as a dedicated mortiser, but at the mo, space, time and funds are limited!

Thanks!

Am I right in thinking that you have also bought a morticing attachment for the drill press. If not, you might be in trouble.

It also has been argued that, even if you do have the attachment, you might still be in some trouble. The attachments tend to be flimsy, inaccurate and difficult to use. Drill presses aren't built for these attachments and the additional pressure is often to much for the rack and pinion.

I considered getting an attachment a while back. After some research I passed. I found it hard to find anyone with a good experience with them.

It didn't come with an attachment, but presumably I could buy one?

To be honest, I wanted a pillar drill mainly for drilling both woodwork, and for metalwork, so if it can't be used for mortising, it's not the end of the world. However, if it can do both, then happy days!

I got one of the attachments a while ago. I tried it once, put it away , and it hasn't been out since!!

Slow and fiddly to setup and the results were less-than-stellar.

Save your money!!

Pillar drills aren't (generally) strong enough for the stresses put on them by the morticer attachment. You can still do mortices but just by drilling out the waste and squaring up with a chisel.

That would be my advice, save your money, or spend it on something else ;)

Agree with the above posters. Drill press morticing attachments are too flimsy.

You'd be better off using a router for all but the deepest mortices - more accurate and far less stress.
