Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
There was a thread on here a year or so ago about this but I'm just wondering if anyone else has actually used one of these machines.

http://www.moretens.co.uk/Machines/MF30.htm

I'm intrigued by the possibilities. I know that Andy King reviewed it and loved it, JonnyD was very interested and that Scrit liked the look of it but has anyone ever bought one?

At around 3 grand it looks great value for a small workshop like mine.

Cheers
Brad

Just watched the video on there site, theres bristol levers everywhere on that thing . looks useful for the smaller workshop that wont fit a tilting spindle moulder, tenoner and overhead router. The only problem i can see is finding somewhere to put all the separate fences, guards, tables, hold down when there not on the machine.

p.s didn't see if i came with a ring fence, you'll need one for curvey table legs..........

I've used one briefly in a workshop in Germany, bloody great bit of kit. Not too many gaurds too worry about as it is difficult to get your digits that close to the spinning bits :)
Wish I could get one over here second hand, but alas no luck. Though I'd rather have the 4 sider planer. :D

I did see one on ebay a couple of months ago and did some research on it because it looked so damn good. I did a search on ebay to see if i could find out how much it went for but it must of been to long ago for it to be in their data base, but it didn't go cheap, that much i remember.

The sliding table looks great on it, but i wonder with all the moving parts on it. The more moving parts on something the more chance of something going wrong. The spindle mechanism can come right out and when you think of the power of the motor and how small the belt is that is in between the pulleys you got to wonder how efficient and robust it will be.

I'd love to see one in action, and someone who has used one for some time to get a feel for it before buying one, but if they are as good as they look i might be getting one to. Seems to be a lot of value for money in it. Let us know if you get one and do keep us informed on it's usefulness and how it stands up. Right now i have to put to much into the building, getting it ready for winter, to put any more money into machinery.

Will be insulating late this week, that should make a difference...

Hi Brad - could be worth contacting Tewkesbury Saw in Gloucester as they have sold Mortens for some time, and maybe either one in showroom or have a customer within their area who may have one for you to view? - I was there last week and I know they said they had more Mortens stock coming in. They know it's a unique machine and they know it's a good machine.

- ok little trip dowh the M6 / M5 but sure they may bend over backwards so you can maybe see it working in the flesh - they know their stuff and are a very good retailer

Contact: Andy - shop manager

Hope this helps

It does look like you need a fair amount of space behind it but an interesting machine never-the-less.

I have had one of these for several years now.
It works extremely well as a standard moulder but because it will rotate through large angles, obviates the need for a whole load of cutters set at different angles eg cill block.
On its side it works well as a very accurate single headed tenoner.
Replacing the spindle with a router spindle allows you to use it as a top level router table for larger cutter head diameters.
If anybody would like to see one in action I live in Somerset and you can contact me via my email

Aha!!

Someone who's actually got one!

I feel the urge coming on for a weekend in Somerset when the weather warms up a bit. SWMBO will be well chuffed with a couple of days away... :?

I'll PM you, Jonathon.

Brad

I cant help but fall in love with the thing! In the absence of lots of room for individual machines that can do what this one machine can do its brilliant if the build quality is as it looks :D

+ on my ideal workshop wishlist
