my drawing skills are completely self taught - other than watching art attack as a kid

For your next challenge I think you should recreate that drawing, but 12ft square, on a school field, using only bananas :)

I like the way you've handily lablled the drill parts Coley. :D

There's me phoning up Meddings (now that I'm a Proper Engineer And Everything for exploded parts diagrams) and all I had to do was ask you.
Not sure if it's obvious from the picture, but my drawing skills are completely self taught - other than watching art attack as a kid

Shut the front door. Let me ring the BBC before they smash those plans all across the news desk. :D

I've actually done this, I did cheat though. I bought the Aldi pillar drill and got another forum member to turn a longer shaft to the correct OD to match the existing so it's twice as tall.

It was turned from solid mild steel (I think), and I even had the shaft modified so that it's in two halves with a piston fit pin and socket connection, that's locked with a grub screw. The socket is on the bottom section so if I wanted to I can revert the pillar drill to it's previous throat of 200mm.

It's been incredibly useful to have a pillar drill with a deep throat (insert innuendo here) but still bench mounted as floor space is lacking. Now I can use long spade bits or augers to drill deep vertical holes, which was the whole point of the modification.

Cost was about £40 and luckily hand delivered as he was in travelling in the neighbourhood.

I can provide pics and details of the maker if you're interested.

Not much help - but I've done the same with an old hand crank drill. It was just too low for the Forstner bits and the base+vice. It was a major faff to swing the top around and start drilling and then go back to the base.

I found reasonably priced stuff on ebay. Got the right length in the correct the old imperial diameter. This was solid bar - but it isn't a bad place to look for prices.
