Hi,

I am looking to buy a mitre saw for various woodworking projects including cutting slices of round logs, 1cm width, up to 25 cm diameter. Some reviews have stated that the machines are not to be used for cutting logs. Other than clamping issues I'm not sure why this would be. Any advice or alternative machine recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

250mm is a large diameter for most saws. You're definitely into bandsaws for that and not a cheap bandsaw either. Most Mitre saws have a maximum depth of cut around 60 - 100mm depending on the saw.

I've got a well equipped workshop, but if I was faced with cutting a few 10mm discs from a 250mm diameter log then I'd use a handsaw. To cut a lot of discs I'd use a bandsaw, but the jigs and fixtures required to do the job as safely and accurately as I can do it with a handsaw are a faff.

When the saw blade connects with the leading edge of the log it tries to rotate the log, so you need to get that under control. Secondly, presumably you've got a decent length of 250mm log overhanging the edge of the bandsaw table, so that will need supporting. And finally you have to feed the log past the blade in a perpendicular orientation, so that'll likely need some jig help too.

Reading between the lines Pandion I suspect you're trying to substitute hand tool skills with machinery. Nothing wrong with that, but in this particular case the scale of the equipment needed, and the challenge of the jig construction, means you're almost certainly better off doing the job by hand. Sure, you'll likely mess up the first few attempts, but if you persevere you'll get there before too long.

Good luck!

Definately don't use a mitre saw for log cutting - I tried it a long time ago without being aware of what happens

I can't help wondering which mitre saw you have looked at or have in mind that will cut 25cm (250mm) and your budget for such a machine?

Sorry, but I can't stop myself form asking the question.
