Hand held circular saws:

I'm currently using a borrowed no-name 7 1/4" circular saw after someone was kind enough to steal my Makita  So I'm on the lookout for a replacement. I'd usually go for Makita but (without meaning to sound vain) I don't like the look of them. So I was thinking of getting a Metabo KS54 160mm saw, just wondered if anyone had any opninions on this? It's a bit smaller but the 54mm cutting depth would be ok as the thickest things I usually cut with this type of tool is 2" thick roofing timber. When doing compond cuts on the hips and jack rafters I normally use the circular and finish off with a handsaw anyway so the smaller blade size is ok. The majority of use is cutting ply (usually 3/4") so the smaller size and lighter weight would be good.
Any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Scooby,

For smallness and lightness (and quality), have you looked at the Hitachi 7BU?. It also has that rare feature - a blade brake. All in all, a very nice little saw. I think it cuts 60mm.

cheers,

FYI, I had one of these (C7BU2) but returned it - saw blade was not quite parallel to edge of base (ie the one axis that can't be adjusted). About 1mm out between front and back of blade. Also base itself wasn't quite straight, tapering very slightly at front and back. Both of which meant I couldn't accurately follow a straight edge with it.

Bit disappointed because otherwise decent - light and brake is good. Not sure if it was just mine - but timing dictated against waiting for another one and did without. Axminster were v helpful, though, and refunded no problem.

scooby you could do worse than checkout mafell saws too,
their latest kss series offers a rail system which also
allows short cross cuts off the rail.
