Just finished this toy for my grandson's 5th birthday. With the exception of the exhaust stacks it's made up of several species of hardwood offcuts I had lying the workshop. About a 120 hours work and finished off with 3 coats of Danish oil to bring out the best of the wood.
The cab of the truck was loosely based on a plan, the rest of it was scratch built on the fly. All the winches, hoists, outriggers and lifting cradle at the rear of the truck work. Headlamps and mirrors were made from an old CD and cut to size using a scroll saw as was the Mercedes badge on the front on the truck which is just over an inch in diameter, cut from mahogany and the angles on the star detailed using some needle files. The other lamps were made from shaped slithers of pine dowel so as to give a lens effect and were coloured to suit using food dyes. Hope you enjoy looking.

Very very nice - I hope he cherishes it for years to come - was it a plan from a Gent called Blizzard I think it was who did a book on wooden toys

Thanks for the kind comments.....The cab is a loosely based version of a free truck plan which can currently be downloaded for free at Toymakingplans
other than this the rest of the toy is scratch built on the fly.
I asked my Grandson what he wanted for his birthday a couple of months ago and at the age of 4 coming up to 5 he is completely truck mad, nice I suppose he didn't want anything electronic, but I digress. I searched around the net looking for something that would suit, but found nothing to my liking, so eventually came up with this.
Strangely enough I do have a copy of one of Richard Blizzards books, but my grandson typically didn't want any of models in that and was adamant he wanted a wrecker.
Thanks again for your kind comment.

It's far too good for a kiddie. Take it away from him and keep it for yourself! Excellent work.

What a lovely truck!
A Lot of work and thought gone into that badboy!
Trouble is, he will, no doubt, need something to recover, so you could be busy for a while yet.
congratulations and regards Rodders

I now have 3 commissions to build the same truck, with deposits taken. Amazing what happens when you present your grandsons present at his birthday party. All the yummy mummies and daddies went nuts over it. Guess who hasn't been out the workshop very much since Saturday and whose planer/thicknesser has been on overtime?

Excellent news! TBH. I'm not surprised as it's such a lovely truck.
I hope you enjoy the making of them.
Regards Rodders

I hope your charging the going rate, a model like that is worth a bob or two, I'm not surprised you got a few orders though, and don't think it will stop there either, I think this is something that could keep you busy for the foreseeable future.
