Hi,

I would really appreciate some advice please.

I am wanting to buy some G Plan chest of drawers bedroom furniture from around the 70/80's period. I think I am right in saying these came in a teak veneer.

Would cleaning them down and re-oiling them give me a matching colour on them all, or is it a lot more involved than this.

Thought I had better ask before purchasing.

Any advice would be appreciated.

G Plan furniture can be either oiled or have a cellulose finish. You will need to determine which it has before re applying any finish to it.
Generally just cleaning and re oiling will not match the colours. It is possible to match the colours in with a stain before oiling but if you are not experienced with colour matching you could create problems for yourself.
If the finish is in good condition ie. if it has no major blemishes or fading you could just give it a good clean with a little white spirit on a rag, allow to dry then wax with Liberon Black Bison wax which will help to improve any minor blemishes.
Hope this helps.

My parents had a lot of G Plan furniture and when they died a few years ago - I couldn't give it away - how times have changed?

I'm pretty sure it all had a cellulose finish that my mother used to wax polish? As MrP said, if so very difficult to cure colour difference issues - you would have to remove the cellulose first?

Thank you Mr P and Rod for your advice.

I guess it is something I will have to consider carefully - that said, if the units are not put side by side, then maybe any difference will not be that noticeable.

Yes, times have changed Rod. I suspect people are now getting fed up with the modern day rubbish, I know I am.

Thanks again

Sally
