Marples M4 plane

I posted a while back about a few hand planes i received. Apart from the Norris, i also received a Marples M4 smoother. This has the makers mark on the iron and still has the original badge of the handle. Not in 100% good nic but will clean up to be.

Anyone got any info on this plane. Are they collectable?

They're not that collectable, no. The X4's are a little more so but they're not that common. Neither is the M4 really (common I mean). They're a pretty good plane though - usually well made and a bit beefier than the Stanleys.

Everything's collectable.

They're much rarer than Record or Stanley, but only carry a small price premium; maybe 15% more than a similar Record.

Most Marples 'M' planes are old, so they tend to be of the earlier, sturdier design.

I would personally recommend them highly, but as a tool, not an investment.
