Mansfield pen mission

First up, thanks to Doug and Steve for a great evening and to Cath for keeping the tea flowing.
The banter was fierce :twisted:

I am not sure if Steve was wired from another thread or all the coffee

The guys talked me through my first pen and my first go at turning plastic. Good fun and I am well pleased with the result.

Doug turned a very nice tulip wood pen totaly with a sque (spelling?!?)

Doug took some more pics so hopfully they will follow.

Good on Steve and Doug for showing you how, it must be nice to have a get together round the lathe. Living in the @rse end of nowhere I just get me own company :lol:

got to second that, it was a great night indeed, doug and kath are the perfect hosts, so when is the bash then doug :wink: :wink:
Rich did really well with the acrylic getting it to a beautiful shine, and the fit was good too.
It was fun watching doug turn his pen using only the skew chisel, not for the faint hearted and something i wont do.

The evening started with Steve arriving first, giving us an opportunity to glue up an acrylic blank before Rich arrived a little later.

Once all there, talk naturally turned to the forum, in particular how Steve felt he`d been misunderstood, & was keen to point out that he wasn`t angry or ranting about the pen competition, more sad & disappointed at the response.

We all saw his point of view :^o & decided that nothing more would be said on the subject. After all we were all mature adults & any further comment could be seen as ridicule.

That decided Mad dog was asked to mount a blank & talk us through how he would turn an acrylic blank into a pen, of say, competition standard, that would be appreciated by all who saw it :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:





Thanks for coming over boys, i can`t remember laughing so much for ages, though i think that is obvious from your faces on the pics.

First up Rich tackles the acrylic blank.

Whilst Mad dog imparts some more wisdom.

Finally Mad dog kindly demonstrates ca/blo finishing on my tulip wood pen.

It was a raucous evening, which i definitely would like to repeat ( if Mad dog forgives me). Thanks for all the advice fellas, & rich many thanks for the maser birch & also showing me the correct way to use the skew.
I admit your way of putting the bevel on the timber & slowly introducing the cutting edge works much better than my stabbing at the wood with my eyes shut.

rich on dougs first two pics your sanding with your hand over the tool rest- this pratice isnt a good habit to get into as you can easily hurt your hand/wrist my advice is to remove the rest when your sanding in the future.
