I`m after a router for general use & particularly for kitchen worktop fitting. This router has some very good reviews & seems to be on offer for a low price for a Makita. The query is whether the rather unusual design where the body rises & falls on a giant thread which wraps around the body would allow cutting a 40mm worktop easily with a few passes? It seem the height variation is just 30mm so I thought if the cutter chosen protrudes beneath the sole plate by 10mm to start with then you would dial your way down with successive cuts. If that`s possible or you have one & know it`s strengths & weaknesses relative to an `ordinary ` plunge router it would be great if you could advise. Many thanks.

Hi, there's a thread on it here : makita-3601b-t44001.html :)

Also, bear in mind that router cutters are designed to sit at a certain point in the collet (often indicated by a k mark). This might not protrude the 10mm you want, and extending it beyond that mark can be dangerous.

Sounds like you really need a plunge router...

For kitchen worktops you will be far better off with a proper plunge router, that after each cut you can put it down, you can't do that with a fixed base router until the bit has stopped, I use a Hitachi MV2 for all the worktops I have fitted (just my own and friends) and its ideal IMO:
