i have this model
bleedin brilliant piece of kit...if you search the forum you'll find nothing but praise for it...

chip extraction is fine for me...i hook it up to the w/shop vac and get very little blow back...

I imagine the extraction can only be as good as the extractor you are using?

Some cheaper planers/thicknessers do have poorly designed dust cowls/hoods which are quite simply too narrow but, this should not be the case on something made by Makita.

Tenpin, does the chip extraction work ok with a 'shop vac? I'd always thought you needed a 'proper' extraction system ie. high volume low pressure, to take away bigger chips. I don't have a thicknesser, just a wishlist at present but I have kind of put off thinking about a thicknesser because I thought I would have to put in a dust extraction system to replace my vac and Triton dust bucket.

Personally, I'd agree with you George - you would need a HVLP extractor rather than a vacuum. But, since I don't own a stand alone thicknesser, I'm willing to be proven wrong!

You don't necessarily need to plumb in an entire extraction system around your workshop; you can buy chip collectors which are quite easily portable, enabling you to move them from machine to machine.

Chip collectors are also a lot quieter than LVHP vacuums! :D

when i say shop vac i mean this:
