I really want to improve dust extraction to a 3hp system. I have a 3hp motor and plan to use a thien separator bin and then vent the rest to the outside.

Is can't find an affordable 3hp dust extractor so this is why I'm doing it. 750w extractors aren't doing enough for me.

Anyone done this?

Here's one that's built from wood:
https://woodgears.ca/dust_collector/index.html

Also search Marius Hornberger on youtube for another wooden dust collector build.

I'm making one as well based on both the above designs.

You need to find a motor and it should be a 2-pole or 2880rpm model. A wooden design cannot be material handling so pre-separation and metal grille to protect the inlet to the impeller is needed. Balancing it can be tricky, the bigger you make it anyway.

The small dust collector blower from woodgears with a 600W motor outperforms a 1500W commercial dust collector in power (you can see it in one of his videos).

If you where to build that one you'd need to scale it up a bit because his motor runs at 3450rpm (because they have 60hz in north america and we have 50hz so out motors run slower). I think 42cm instead of 35cm.

I haven't done this yet, but I have a 2HP motor that I'm planning to build a wooden blower from along the lines of Matthias Wandel's linked above. I put a spreadsheet together to help with sizing, if you want it then send me a PM.
