Mac Laptop ?

Hi

I have used cputers for many years from BBC basic , Acorn , PC etc but never used or owned a Mac !!

Anybody know what the best deal is at the moment on one

Any advice / web sites may help

There aren't usually deals on Apple hardware. My last couple have been bought direct from the Apple Store online.
You might get a good reduction on a refurbished model (my son - no3 - bought one) from somewhere like Cancom.
If you can claim any educational ties you can get a discount.

Like Smudger says, there are no deals such as exist in the PC world. Apple themselves do a bit on refurbished models (that carry a guarantee) and from time to time will offer a few bits and bobs when you buy a Mac.

I suggest you head over to Bluewater and look in the Apple store there. I got mine from them and have been happy with the service/attitude etc.

If you want to try an older generation PowerPC model you can pick up some nice bargain iBooks or Powerbooks on ebay. However, I think the new intels are great.

I personally own a Mac mini and Powermac, but my machine that i always use is my MacBook - the widescreen format is great, and it runs everything I throw at it including windows and can't recommend these enough. Sometimes ironically PC World will have a few offers - I think these are usually old stock, you can sometimes catch an offer on their website, but you have to be either lucky or quick.

And watch out for dodgy Powerbooks on sale on eBay. There are a huge number that get listed fraudulently because they are so popular.

I suspect that you might be lucky if you are quick and in the right place at the right time as Apple have stopped shipping any more new stock AFAIK since the launch of their latest version of their superb OS is imminent - Leopard. So there may be a few end-of-line reductions but don't hold your breath.

When you do buy one make sure that you get a voucher that entitles you to a free upgrade to leopard when it is released.
